BILL FROM LAPCS’ CHARTER 3.0 PACKAGE GAINS UNANIMOUS SUPPORT
HB 647 by Rep. Romero passes in the House Chamber, 100-0!
BATON ROUGE, LA—2025 will mark the 30th anniversary of Louisiana’s charter school law. Louisiana charter schools are non-profit, tuition-free public schools of choice open to all families! Because one size does not fit all in education, charter schools have the autonomy to provide unique educational opportunities in exchange for tough accountability standards.
Last week, Rep. Troy Romero's HB 647 passed with overwhelming favorability in the House Chamber, 100-0. HB 647 seeks to reduce the non-academic instructional burdens placed on teachers.
“I am proud to author HB 647 supporting the teachers of Louisiana. This bill passed easily out of the House and is now headed to the Senate. I am confident that HB 647 will be on the Governor's desk very soon,” said Rep. Romero. “It is time that the government of this state recognized the burdens that we place on all of our teachers. It is quite evident to me that we need to let our teachers use their God-given talent to educate our children.”
While HB 647 alone will not solve the teacher shortage crisis, it is an attempt to respond to a common complaint of teachers: that they are asked to do far too much.
“We see you, we know how hard you’re working, and we know you need relief from some of the crazy things being asked of you,” said LAPCS Executive Director Caroline Roemer.
“We are really excited about this bill because it’s specifically designed to support our teachers. Our goal is to remove some things off their plates that sit outside of the work they were hired to do, which is to teach. This would require legislators who want to add an instructional requirement to first remove a requirement of equal time.”
Of note: Louisiana’s charter school program is among the best in the country for its rigor and achievement in closing the learning gap. However, limitations still exist on unforeseeable issues when the law was written. LAPCS created a bill package for the 2024 Legislative Session aiming to modernize the law to better support the nearly 150 Louisiana charter schools serving more than 94,000 students.
LAPCS is thrilled and deeply appreciative of the supermajority, bipartisan support for HB 647, which is a testament to the shared commitment to improving Louisiana's education system. Let’s give teachers more time to do what they do best: TEACH!
