Service-Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that connects academic curriculum to real needs in the community by implementing a learn-by-doing approach. Students get real-life experiences in the subject studied by meeting community needs through active participation.
The Brown Foundation Service Learning Program follows the National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) definition and standards of Service Learning. All funded service-learning programs must take place in the classroom and partner with a service partner (such as a non-profit or school other than your own). Our programs also must follow the IPARD (Investigation, Preparation, Action, Reflection, and Demonstration) model developed by NYLC. The Brown Foundation Service Learning Award Application is online and available for grades K-12, to all elementary, middle, junior high and high schools in Louisiana and Mississippi.
The Brown Foundation highly suggests that all new teachers attend a service learning workshop to learn more about service learning and the application process. See the listing of current workshops, or contact us to tailor a workshop for your school!
Applications for the 2019-2020 school year are due by May 3rd, 2019 and funds are awarded at the annual Service Learning Event on September 10th, 2019.
