Message from the Executive Director – March 2018

It’s been another busy month, one which underscored the continuing need for statewide advocacy for charter schools in fighting back against anti-charter forces. Our decade of work paid off with a clear and decisive victory before the La. Supreme Court; stopping schools from being closed, putting students first, and empowering parents.

As Justice Jimmy Genovese stated in an interview following the decision, “The ruling affirmed that charter schools are constitutional and that they are public schools with no restrictions.” A big thanks to all of our members and partners for your support in bringing this critical case to its rightful conclusion. We continue to track and engage on other legal matters including issues dealing with organized labor, desegregation orders, and an operating agreement issue with a local authorizer.

In addition, we were able to turn back yet another legislative effort to place a moratorium on charter applicants as well as charter renewals. Thanks for answering our action alerts; your calls and emails make a big difference with legislators by creating personal stories and contact points.

Speaking of taking action, I wanted to remind you about our important facilities survey, which is due today, March 30. The CSFI Survey is a shared project with the Colorado League of Charter Schools to identify issues and raise a state and national awareness regarding facility issues. The response to date has been well below our goal, so I am personally asking you to please designate the appropriate person on your team to complete and return to us right away.

Finally, I want to take a moment and remember Adrian Morgan. It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since Adrian passed away and I’ve missed his friendship. I know he’d be pumped with the success of Michigan in the NCAA Tournament: Geaux Big Blue! Happy Spring and I hope you have a relaxing break.

Please make sure to read our March 2018 Newsletter Here.

Regards,

Caroline
