Message from the Executive Director – June 2018

Greetings,

It’s hard to believe half of 2018 is gone! And that it’s so hot! Hopefully, you’re getting a moment to catch your breath, reflect and recharge your batteries.

LAPCS has had a busy June. One key focus has been on helping our members build strong, effective boards through the Top Shelf, including the New Orleans launch of our new Charter Board Leadership Academy, which will help develop the next generation of board leaders. Our hope is to expand that program to other parts of the state in the coming year, so stay tuned.

Our Bottom Line team just returned from two days in North Louisiana working with school leaders, directors of finance and operations, and board members on important non-academic topics. Thanks to all of you who attended. It’s always great to spend time with people we don’t get to see often enough.

Like many of you, LAPCS also traveled to the great state of Texas for the National Charter Schools Conference, where we were an active voice in the national conversation about charter schools. I should also note that we skipped hosting a state get together this year at the conference, but we received enough feedback that we won’t make that mistake again!

In closing, I’d like to take a moment and recognize a huge milestone in New Orleans. On July 1, all schools will return to the Orleans Parish School Board. After more than 12 years of work, the Recovery School District will no longer have oversight of any New Orleans schools.

While there are many things to reflect up and look ahead to, I want to thank everyone who has been a part of the RSD. The work has been hard and we all realize there is work left to be done by OPSB. However, let’s celebrate RSD’s accomplishments that changed the expectations and hopes for what is possible for New Orleans students. While there are different opinions, one must concede that the RSD absolutely changed the conversation about public education and in so doing, forged their legacy.

On behalf of the LAPCS membership and staff, thank you! We will miss your contributions but look forward to continuing the work with the Orleans Parish School District.

Regards,

Caroline
