About $240,000 of teaching grants aimed at linking classroom learning with community-service work will be available for the 2011-12 school year, Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne said last week.
Dardenne, who oversees the Louisiana Serve Commission, which works to foster and promote volunteerism, said the grant program will provide up to $5,000 per year for new public school programs and a maximum of $12,000 for established programs. Grants of up to $50,000 are available to school districts, and grants of up to $25,000 are available for public-private, non-profit programs in kindergarten through 12th grade.
Besides individual public schools and school districts, Dardenne said, kindergarten through 12th grade public school teachers are eligible to apply for the grants as well as public or private nonprofit groups that have been organized for at least a year and work with youth and provide public service projects for student participation.
Dardenne said the grants help link classroom activity with projects outside of class that help meet a community need. Grant applications are available at www.crt.state.la.us/laserve/las. Deadline for submission of the applications is April 15, Dardenne said.
