BATON ROUGE, LA - The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) is inviting eligible high school seniors to apply for the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program. The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program is a federally funded program that provides scholars approximately $1,500 a year for four years of undergraduate study.

Applications are available to eligible 2010-2011 high school seniors from Louisiana public and nonpublic schools. Byrd Scholars are selected on the basis of demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, and the potential for continued academic success at an accredited institution of higher education, such as postsecondary vocational institutions, proprietary institutions, and public and private nonprofit institutions of higher education. The selection process for Byrd Scholars also aims to ensure that all regions of the state are fairly represented. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and Louisiana residents.

The scholarships will be awarded in May 2011 for study at an accredited institution of higher education beginning in the fall 2011 semester. Last year, 137 Louisiana high school seniors were awarded Byrd Scholarships.

Applications for the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship are available through all public and nonpublic high school guidance counselors. Completed applications must be submitted to the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, attention Shan Davis, Robert C. Byrd Scholarship Coordinator, Post Office Box 94064, Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9064. The deadline for applications is Friday, March 4, 2011.
